Eisenhower took up painting late in life, and actually became quite skilled. He had a long-term correspondence with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill who also enjoyed painting. She played the piano, organ, enjoyed dancing, sewing, and quite enjoyed playing cards. She was especially fond of bridge, mahjong and canasta. Mamie planned all aspects of state events at the White House during Ike's two terms in office, and was active in fundraising activities for several organizations and charities.

Mrs. Eisenhower was also instrumental in raising funds to establish a home for Army widows who, at the time, received minimal benefits from the government. Originally called the Army Distaff Home, it was founded to provide affordable, secure retirement housing and health care services for Army widows. Mamie helped break ground for the facility which opened its doors in 1962, and was named Knollwood.

He also dedicates some of his spare time to a variety of charities. Back in the 1990s, General Schwarzkopf joined fellow sporting clay enthusiasts in establishing the Children's Home Sporting Clays Classic (now popularly known as the Schwarzkopf Classic). The fundraiser benefits the Children's Home in Tampa, Florida. The Children's Home was founded more than a century ago and is dedicated to helping children who are victims of abuse, neglect or abandonment.

Another of his favorite charities was one that he actually helped found in 1996. Camp Boggy Creek in Eustis, Florida (north of Orlando), each year offers thousands of seriously ill kids weeklong summer camp sessions and family retreat weekends for the whole family. This is all done at no cost to their families. Camp Boggy Creek is a "Hole in The Wall Camp" and was patterned after Paul Newman's original Hole in The Wall Gang Camp in northeastern Connecticut. Newman was also one of the co-founders of Camp Boggy Creek.
