Devaughn Darling |
|
Devaughn Darling was an American athlete and Florida State University football player.
The Seminole linebacker was credited with 11 tackles and one
sack in seven games during the 2000 season. Devaughn was
expected to move into the FSU starting lineup the next season.
His sudden death was said to be related to the hereditary
condition, sickle-cell trait. An increasing amount of research
has linked sickle-cell trait to sudden death during strenuous
exercise.
While tragedy was certainly not unknown to the Florida
State football team, it was the first time a death resulted
during an organized school activity.
His twin brother, Devard Darling, was a receiver for the
Florida State Seminoles, Washington State, and later, wide
receiver for the NFL Baltimore Ravens.
