"Dimebag" Darrell Abbott

"Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was an American singer, musician, and lead guitarist for the heavy metal bands Pantera and Damageplan. The thrash rock pioneer and two-time Grammy nominee was best known for I'm Broken, Revolution Is My Name, Mouth For War, Power Metal, New Found Power, Reinventing The Steel, The Great Southern Trendkill, Cowboys From Hell and Far Beyond Driven. Pantera had been one of the most popular heavy metal bands of the early 1990s. Darrell and his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott, founded Damageplan after Pantera's acrimonious breakup.

The virtuoso guitarist was shot and killed on stage during a 2004 concert. The gunman, Nathan Gale, was shot and killed by police officer James Niggemeyer who confronted Gale after he took a hostage at gunpoint, immediately following the shootings. Many of those present at the nightclub praised the officer and credited him with saving lives.
