Timothy Treadwell

Timothy Treadwell was a self-taught bear expert, American filmmaker and self-appointed bear guardian. He was also a photographer whose life story was told in the 2005 Werner Herzog film Grizzly Man.

Timothy Treadwell was co-founder of Grizzly People, an organization whose mission is to help preserve bears and their habitat through educational efforts. He was co-author of Among Grizzlies: Living With Wild Bears in Alaska.

Remains: He was cremated and a portion of his ashes were scattered near Kaflia Bay, Katmai National Park and Preserve, Alaska, U.S.A.


Error corrections or clarifications

* Treadwell and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard, did not die on "October 6, 2003," as many initial reports claimed. Subsequent investigations were able to pinpoint the date and time of their deaths listed above.

NOTE: He was not born in either Australia or England, despite the many fanciful tales the self-proclaimed eco-warrior told about his early life.
