Leo Ryan |
|
Leo Ryan was an American politician who was assassinated
by followers of Jim Jones' Peoples Temple cult
during the Jonestown massacre. The congressman went
to Jonestown to investigate reports of torture and
hostage-holding by Jim Jones' former California-based
Peoples Temple ministry. The Peoples Temple had been
based in the Bay area before moving to Guyana, and
a number of his constituents had become concerned
about family members who'd joined the cult.
Leo J. Ryan was a 4-term U.S. Congressman (1973-78)
serving California's 11th Congressional District,
a member of the California State assembly (1963-73),
Mayor of South San Francisco (1962), and a South
San Francisco city councilman (1956-62). Ryan was
the first U.S. congressman to die in the line of duty.
