Jimmy Hoffa |
|
Jimmy Hoffa was an American union leader who served
as President of the Teamsters union (1957-71), and
later disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
His body was never found, which has led to endless
speculation about his fate. Hoffa was a controversial
labor leader who helped expand the Teamsters
influence and also its links to the mafia.
Even as he served as chief of the world's
largest trade union, Jimmy Hoffa was charged
with numerous criminal acts and was convicted
of many serious crimes including jury tampering
(attempted bribery of a grand juror, 1964),
and mail and wire fraud (1964). Incredibly,
his conviction on charges of conspiracy to
misuse the Teamsters' pension fund did
little to diminish his popularity with the
rank and file of the very union he attempted
to defraud. Hoffa later spent several years
in prison for the jury tampering and fraud
convictions.
His life story was told in many films, including
Hoffa. Jack Nicholson received critical
acclaim for his portrayal of Jimmy Hoffa in
that 1992 motion picture, which was directed
by Danny DeVito.
