Admiral Samuel Gravely |

Admiral Samuel Gravely was the first African-American
Admiral, the first African-American to command a
U.S. naval fleet (the Third Fleet), and the first
African-American to command a U.S. Navy warship.
He also served as Director of the Defense
Communications Agency (1978-80). The three-star
Admiral served in World War II, the Korean War,
and the Vietnam War, in a naval career that spanned
from September 15th, 1942, to his retirement on
August 1st, 1980.
He was the recipient of the American Campaign Medal,
Bronze Star, Chinese Service Medal, Defense
Distinguished Service Medal, Korean Presidential
Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal with two
bronze stars, Legion of Merit with gold star,
Navy Commendation Medal with gold star with Combat
"V", National Defense Medal with one bronze star,
Naval Reserve Medal, and the United Nations Service
Medal.
