Shirley Chisholm

Shirley Chisholm was a pioneering African-American politician, 7-term U.S. Congresswoman representing the 12th Congressional District in Brooklyn, New York (1969-82), assemblywoman in the New York State Legislature (1964-68), and Professor at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, where she taught politics and women's studies (1983-87).

Shirley Chisholm was the first African-American woman to serve in the United States Congress, and the first black to seek a major party's nomination for the U.S. presidency. Unbought and Unbossed, and The Good Fight, were two autobiographical accounts she wrote of her pioneering political life.
