Governor Lawton Chiles |
|
Lawton Chiles was an American politician, two-term
41st Governor of Florida (1991-98), three-term U.S.
Senator (1970-89), member of the Florida House of
Representatives (1958-66), and the Florida State Senate
(1966-70).
The folksy Southern Democrat was dubbed "Walkin' Lawton"
for conducting a "shoe leather, shoestring campaign"
in his first U.S. Senate campaign in 1970, walking from
one end of the state to the other, covering over 1,000
miles in three months. It was Governor Lawton Chiles
who initiated Healthy Start and Healthy Families, to
nurture the educational, health and social development
of infants and toddlers in Florida, and expanded the
KidCare health-insurance program.
