Jacques Anquetil was a professional cyclist, bicycle
racing champion, and the first person to win the
Tour de France 5 times (1957, 1961-1964). He was a
two-time winner of the Giro d'Italia race (1960 and
1964). He won the prestigious Grand Prix des Nations,
a record nine times (1953-58, 1961, 1965-66), and
broke the hour world cycling record, covering 46.159
kilometers in 1956. Eleven years later he would retake
the record, covering 47.493 kilometers, but this world
record time was never officially certified.
